    I suggest you learn ActionScript 2.0, the programming language commonly was for Flash 8.

    Here's the best list of tutorials I know of for both game creation and AS:

    You press F9 on a newly created document, for your first few games you're probably going to be a script kiddie, that's okay, after a while you'll begin to understand what certain things mean and then be able to write AS pretty well, if you do get stuck, you can click this neat little tool called Script Assist, it's in the top right corner, and that simplifies code writing, this helps even people like me, who know some stuff about AS, as it makes stuff quicker, in my case, writing the code for buttons.

    Aye, first off you're going to need a character, I want you open a new document, and put a simple shape, let's say a circle, on it.

    Okay, it should look a little something like that, say hello to your shape, he's your hero, you player character, let's make him move!

    I want to highlight your shape, and hit F8, keep it as a movie clip (MC) and call it something like "Player".

    After you've done that, click on your shape and hit F9, this shoul bring up the Actions screen, shown below.

    Now I want you to paste the below code into the ActionScript panel.

    Code:
    onClipEvent(load){
    speed=10; stop();
    }
    onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
    _x+=Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)*speed;
    _x-=Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)*speed;
    _y+=Key.isDown(Key.DOWN)*speed;
    _y-=Key.isDown(Key.UP)*speed;
    }
    Now hit crtl+Enter, which should publish your work in swf. format, press the arrow keys, this should move your player around the screen. Well done, you now have a moving character!

    Coming soon: Walls, doors, HitTests and player centered cameras.

    I have to go do some work, I'll finish this later

    is a good starter tutorial for such games, it helps as a starter. Also, remember Actionscript isn't just restricted to in-flash, external .as files can be used as well to keep track of things.
