    Regarding sexuality...

This is probably some ancient argument that I've been oblivious to for the last dozen years, but I thought of something a few minutes ago. If some people believe that homosexuals are born that way and can't control their sexuality, doesn't that mean the same thing could apply to other sexual preferences that aren't as common?

I suppose the best example would be a pedophile. If there's some magical gene that controls sexuality, what's to say that someone can't be born with a natural attraction to children? Is it really fair to send someone to jail, then label them as a sex offender if they look at CP? I know it's different than being a homosexual since both are consenting adults, but if the CP already exists, should people be penalized for collecting it?

Note that I'm not only talking about pedophiles. It's just the most common example.

That is definitely a good argument. I'm not too educated on the subject but it seems that if homosexuality really is something you're born into, then it would apply to other types of sexuality.

People don't get thrown in jail for being attracted to kids, they go to jail for permitting or participating in some one in activities that break the law, child pornography is one of these illegal activities.

So the real argument is, should children under the age of 15 be able to have sex?

In my opinion, and the laws, no, as in the majority of cases the child does not fully understand the situation.

    Re: Regarding sexuality...

It could be very possible that we're simply ostracizing certain people because we see their attractions as odd or obscene. Now, in the case of pedophilia, it's generally not because of the fact that they are attracted to children, however disturbing that may be to people, but when they act on it it becomes a crime.

But, would you really want a self-admitted pedophile living next door, regardless if he did anything or not? It's a stereotype we've got attached to the persona. I'd hate to say it, but a lot of the time, stereotypes are correct. That's why they become popular, because people realize that it's actually true.

So, we keep an eye on people we find 'odd'. We have certain laws, though, and if anyone, regardless of sexual preference, breaks them, then they will probably have some action taken against them.

Well it has been speculated that the hormones and the amount of them you recieve in the womb controls your sexuality. Some of this has been proven, for example, gay men tend to have a ring finger shorter than their pointer, do to less testosterone recieved while in the womb. Yes, this has been proven guys, don't call "wolf" if you don't know what it looks like.

I don't know for sure what controls sexuality, if anything does at all. I just don't know what it matters to the people around them. It's their life, not ours, don't worry about it.

Eh, every since finding that finger thing on that Barrymore show, I've thought it was just a coincidence, i.e, my ring finger is shorter, but I'm straight.

Do you know what proof means in the scientific community?

Fact/facts proving a partial, or whole idea.

Didn't anyone ever tell you to not use the word you're defining in the definition?

My point is that you can't "prove" anything in the natural world. Even the most widely recognized/accepted scientific ideas aren't recognized as being proven. Just because there are several studies that show a possible correlation between prenatal hormone levels and homosexuality doesn't mean that anyone has proven it. The studies might show evidence that it's a possibility, but the way you worded your initial post, you made it sound like it was some irrefutable fact.

I guess I'm being a bit picky since you originally said it was speculated and then went on to repeat how it was proven a few times.

All I have to say is that it's a possibility. I personally don't see enough scientific evidence backing it up (a handful of studies spread out) for it to make me change my opinion.
