    Ethics

Is it just a social convention or is it some objective?
For example, everyone knows that slavery is "wrong" but is it actually wrong or is it just a"social convention" influenced by the culture?
I personally think that it is just a convention.

Ethics are relative, nothing wrong with that.

    Oh boy...

I think the best place to ask about ethics is http://www.mandm.org.nz/
Mathew Flannagan is especially good on the topic, he has a PHD >

    Re: Ethics

It depends from what way you approach ethics. Religions all have their own ethical system which they base upon their beliefs and teachings, but non-religious people may base it on societies values or common decency (most probably a mix of the two (don't forget that religious ethics would come into play for societies values)) In essence, it is subjective to the individual, but it may be the same to many over a broad degree.

    Re: Ethics

The only ethical norm that I have a problem with is the general consensus on charity. If you don't help the less fortunate and have no desire to, you're a bad guy.

    I say bullshit.

    Re: Ethics

Ethics are completely relative. Thats why children will steal, fight, insult, etc., because nobody has taught them not to yet. Once they get trained though, they conform to the beliefs of the society that raised them

(Thats why we still have cannibals in Africa. Nobody taught them that human meat is scared and shouldnt be consumed...tastes good though.)

    Re: Ethics

Ethics are a "social convention" as you say unless you believe in a religion. If you are an atheist then there is no real right or wrong it just depends on how you where raised as a child. Lets say you taught someone from birth that killing a person is the right thing to do then they would value you that as part of there ethics. Were from our point of view that is not the right thing and you would be punish harshly. It's simply just not knowing any better than what you have been taught.
