You definitely don't want to get a cheap guitar, especially if you think you'll be playing a lot. At least I know I didn't want one, I knew it would be a while before I got a second one.

What's your price range? My first one was around $400-$600. It's a Fender Stratocaster, but maybe you would want to get a Squire. Which you probably know is a cheaper Fender, but I didn't want to get it because I'd feel inferior :3

Epiphone SG's, Squires or Les Pauls are a good choice. The sound is your own personal choice, but those 2 are good for their price and shape. You should avoid flying v shapes, because they're pretty awkward to hold when you're playing them, and that'd piss you off to insanity when you start out.

I can't recommend anything for a good sound, because, well, it's all personal preference. At the music store, or wherever you're buying the guitar, ask the assistant can you try a lot of different guitars within a certain price range, just to see if you like the sound. Make sure you test the guitars on the amp you're buying :P If you're buying a guitar/amp second-hand, well, don't buy it from someone you don't trust >_>

If you like a nice rock/clean tone. Epiphone Les Paul is for you. I'm not sure what your music store sells them for, but I got mine for $350

Pretty much any Les Paul has a nice tone, pretty strong stings, lol, and everything else.

Yeah, probably an Epiphone would be fine. Try to get them at like guitar center, they're pretty cheap.
