Why are animators getting better in general?

I saw the old DD collabs a few weeks again and I wondered why the whole animator-movement is getting better.
I don't mean the individual animators, more likely the potential in general.

If there are new users on this forum, they are generally better than back in the days.

What I really want to say is, that the highest potential a few years ago is like Intermediate today, so why did the measurement got higher over the years?

Re: Why do animators are getting better in general?

That is a question only the admins or generally anyone who has been active since 2006 can answer.
I'm guessing it's the elites that pushed the limit and made us lower ranks be where we are today.

Also, fix the title lol. Why are animators getting better in general?

Standards raise because people are constantly discovering new ways of doing things. There are more stick making techniques and more techniques of how to move a stick figure with as much realism as possible. It all works downwards. The elites will keep releasing better and better animations, so the vets have to release better stuff to get elite. Because of this, the intermediates must animate at a higher quality to become veteran. Because of this, beginners must animate at a better quality to get to intermediate.

Well, it all comes down on the people introducing new shit.

Couple examples: Crono came with poses, now that's getting more and more elaborated throughout time. We're now realizing key poses and transitional poses. Krusty came in with the fad of the bouncy style, learning people to put expression into movements, now that's slowly getting stressed more and more.

There's people that keep getting better, the people see the techniques they use and try them out, if the technique works we remember it and slowly get better and better at it.

Sorta the same as with everything, this answer also replies to why the stakes in sports keep getting higher. It's the introduction and elaboration of new techniques.

    Uh, hi. I do stuff.

As the community builds more knowledge, there's more information we can share with the others. More information causes better animation. In addition to that, there are more experienced animators right now, who animated longer, for obvious reasons.

    GifGiff actually started that first.

Like everyone has stated so far, people just push boundaries to new heights which raise the standards by a lot. The newcomers are better than the ones back in the day because they try to emulate what the higher ranks do today - who to some extent create better animations than the higher ranks a few years back. Not trying to say we're better than the people in the past, but the oldies introduced the foundation for how we animate and we're just continuously building upon it to further perfect the art of pivot animation. Knowing the standards, the new peeps follow the already created principles (eg. Baha's tut) in order to make "better" shit, while back in the day the standards were lower and everyone was still testing the water. As the higher ranks aim for the most realism and potential in pivot, everyone else below them tries to reach for that same concept. Like blot said, it works downwards.

the best would represent elite, as they got better, their old rank was pushed down, new space. Say oblivionfall suddenly became ultimate, not that he isn't already, our ranks would be pushed down, there'd be bigger gaps between beginner and elite.
