    My internet is, well, shaky

That's the best way I can describe it.

My internet speed is fluctuating a lot. I noticed that my internet was ridiculously sluggish (10 seconds to load a simple page) so I decided to go to speedtest.net. According to their test, I can get 5.8 mbps down and 500 kb/s up. Nothing remarkable, but it certainly doesn't explain my problem. I did notice though, that while testing the download speed would go up and down between 4.5-6 mbps, which didn't make sense.

I'm running this computer using a wireless connection, but I don't think that's to blame because the test involves downloading and uploading a file, so I'd imagine that it would test the connection speed of my computer, not just the cable line.

Does anyone have an explanation as to why my internet would be ridiculously slow, but speedtest says it's normal?

I would guess it's just the browser itself. Try using a different browser ATM. Maybe Opera.

I don't think it's that. I tried downloading a file off Rapidshare using a download manager/accelerator, and it downloaded at about 100 kb/s. But if it's only one file, it'll normally be 3-4 times that fast. So there was no browser involved.

I've had this problem too. I remembered reading a tutorial that referred me to a very helpful program that sets everything for you. I think it was called TCP optimizer, and the tutorial was at speedguide.net I think.
