Most likely photoshop, you can buy that or you can download paint.NET or GIMP for free.

Photoshop is a good program to use but it can take a while to get used to, try out using a program like GIMP to see if you're really interested

Or you could download the Photoshop trial which lasts 30 days

    Photoshop: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/

CS5 goes for about 800usd I think while the extended version is 1000usd. If your a student you get a huge discount reducing the price by about 600-800usd.

Good luck finding actual working art programs for free, GIMP and Paint.net are the only free ones that are well recognized that you will find on the internet with maybe the exception of a few knock-off programs. I would honestly just say, download GIMP or Paint.net and save your money and get the discounted version of Photoshop CS4 or Photoshop CS5 since you are still a student.

    What's wrong with GIMP?
It's probably the next best thing that's free, and it's pretty good imo.
