    XHTML????

This might be more suitable for the Help Section but I'm not to sure, so I'll post it here.

I understand enough HTML to make an okay website, but is the relevance of CSS and Java completely necessary? Is it entirely worth it to learn CSS and Java? I understand CSS is all about making it look better (correct me if I'm wrong). And is PHP necessary? Also where does Java come into? Or is it just for making games?

Edit: May sound stupid but I would really like an opinion from Skype.
Firstly, you're confusing Java with Javascript, the 2 are totally different things.

CSS is pretty necessary if you want to create a website that has any sort of good-looking layout (CSS Dictates the whole design of a site).

Javascript is used for interactivity, and is pretty useful as it continues to run functions even after the page has loaded (So the user can interact with the page without refreshing).

I wouldn't bother with any server-side languages like PHP, until you are pretty confident with CSS and Javascript.

As everyone says, w3schools.com is always a good place to learn the basics.

If your like me and like hearing people explain things check this out:

The main net.tutsplus site has some good tutorials but I suggest you just use them as a guide to see how certain task are done in Javascript rather than following them blindly.

You can create a functional website with just HTML and CSS. CSS is pretty much a necessity for good-looking websites.

Java and PHP aren't necessities, however.

Definitely know HTML and CSS for organised and easy website making. Java is often for user-based interactivity, PHP is for server based commands and such.

So make sure you know HTML and CSS, Javascript might be the next thing to learn, and PHP should probably be a venture when you have your own website server to play with that allows PHP stuff.

It's a must. HTML and XHTML go hand in hand. There is very "little" extra information you have to know anyway.

Or a local server, which you can set up for free.
