    Recovering data from fried HDD

    Hey gang,

I have an old HDD lying around with some files on it I'd really like back. Sadly, in a fit of pure genius, I attached the SATA to USB converter the wrong way and shorted out the system. Or so I think, I got some nice smoke out of the thing, anyway.

I was wondering, is there any way to recover my losses or is it really dead as can be? I'm mainly wondering about possibly switching out the platter with another disc, but since I don't have one of the same size and make lying around (it's an ancient 6GB disk) this most likely wouldn't work.

Any of you have recommendations to try and remedy the situation?

Too much effort and money. If I can't do it personally I'm not going to bother. I'd like the files back, but not that desperately.
