    Universal Search Engine

I spent last night working on a simple "Universal Searcher", Where the user can navigate between sites to search on without refreshing or going to another page. I hope for it to eventually become a more useful version of infinise's searcher.

    uni-search.sf.net

There are still some design problems, e.g the search box shakes a little when another option is clicked.

I'm mainly looking for ciriticism on functionality/layout, and whether the page/images load fast or not. If the layout looks broken, please tell me and also give me your browser+version (I've only tested it in firefox and chrome).

    Keyboard shortucts (turn numlock on):

    numpad 1: Google
    numpad 2: Yahoo
    numpad 3: Wikipedia
    numpad 4: Facebook
    numpad 5: Youtube
    numpad 6: Twitter
    numpad 7: Ebay
    numpad 8: Amazon
    numpad 9: Minepedia

I like it, simple design too. However I'm not sure I'd be inclined to use it. I normally just teather my search engines to search engine bar in FireFox.

    Re: Universal Search Engine

^Thanks. I'm not too concerned about people not wanting to use it (Although that would be cool), I just don't want to work on some long-winded project that I never finish for a change.

Also, I came into school today to find that the search function has stopped working completely, but it works fine on my local server. Is anyone else getting this?

Yeah, I took it down for a while to inspect what was happening, can't see anything wrong/different in my code, so it might be a problem with sourceforge's php settings or something. It's back up now, though.

    Re: Universal Search Engine

It's probably a better idea to use a parameter in order to pick up the selection instead of just ?engine_name, like engine=foo if you intend on using $_GET. Another, better idea would be to use a hidden form element and just grab the post request and process that, it's cleaner than just changing the form action.

If you intend to stick using the action modification route it's probably a good idea to at least give a script or url path for the action. I've had experience in work on some Mac machines whereby if the action is not valid i.e. empty or is just a param it will completly hang when the form is submitted.

    Re: Universal Search Engine

Fixed the search problem, turns out something was interfering with the header() function.

@Adam: Seems like a better idea, I'll work on changing it just now.

    Re: Universal Search Engine

    ^Thanks, man

You can now search multiple engines at a time by typing "!engines [name1] [name2] [etc...]" at the end of a search.

    For example:
buy red t-shirt !engines google amazon ebay

For some reason browsers interpret it as a pop-up window, so allow pop-ups from the site if you want to use it.

Very good idea if you ask me.

Design looks fine, doesn't need to be anything more than minimalistic.
